Bill Kain passes away

AGMARDT’s past Trustee and Chairman, Dr Bill Kain, passed away on Friday the 25th of March. Bill was a Trustee for nine years (2001 to 2010), and Chairman for the last three.

Bill held a number of science and senior management roles in research institutions upon completing his doctorate at Lincoln College in 1975. He was the CEO of Agresearch in the mid 1990s. and went on to hold senior director roles in Lincoln University (1998 – 2003). After which he took on a number of directorship roles within agribusiness and Iwi based enterprises

Bill will be remembered by the writer for his energy, enthusiasm and passion he held for the New Zealand agricultural sector and his unflinching view of its future potential.

Trustee appointments announced

AGMARDT this week announced the appointments of Barry Brook, former chief executive of PGG Wrightson, and Dean Nikora, a Hawkes’s Bay landowner and award-winning business leader.

“We are very fortunate to have Barry and Dean join the AGMARDT Board of Trustees,” said Chairman Jeff Grant.

“They have both excelled within their respective areas of agribusiness and I am sure they will make a valuable contribution to AGMARDT during their time as Trustees.”

Barry, an agri-business consultant, brings extensive international trade expertise having been involved in establishing New Zealand’s largest primary sector business investments in South America. While Dean, who runs a 700ha dairy farm, is a former winner of the Maori Excellence in Farming Ahuwhenua Trophy and is heavily involved in leadership roles within the industry.

They join Jeff Grant and Jacqueline Rowarth, who have been appointed for a further three year term. The appointments were made by Minister of Agriculture Hon. David Carter and came into effect on 1 September 2010.

“I would also like to recognise the contributions of Dr Bill Kain and Max Purnell who will be retiring from their role as Trustees after nine and six years respectively” Mr Grant said

Barry Brook is former chief executive officer of PGG Wrightson having led the mergers of Wrightson with Williams and Kettle and Pyne Gould Guinness in the period 2004 to 2006. He has extensive experience in agribusiness both in New Zealand and internationally, and was heavily involved in the establishment of New Zealand’s largest primary sector business investments in South America, mainly in Uruguay but also in Argentina and Brazil. He is qualified in agricultural commerce and economics and is currently operating as an independent agribusiness consultant.

Dean Nikora runs a 1,600-cow dairy property in the central Hawke's Bay and also has interests in several other operations within the region. An experienced participant in industry matters, he was awarded the Maori Excellence in Farming Ahuwhenua Trophy in 2008. Dean was elected to the Ballance board of directors in 2004. Dean is a member of the Fonterra Shareholders Council, a director on Asurequality Limited and former director of the Hawke's Bay Primary Health Organisation. He is currently involved in a leadership capacity as a trustee for Taipahi A1 Maori land administered by Te Puni Kokiri.
